He'd previously made new versions of the levels as an add-on for the free mod version of Black Mesa, and has good things to say about how and why they've expanded Surface Tension in the commercial release. LambdaGeneration had a good interview in January with Black Mesa mapper Chon Kemp about Surface Tension Uncut.

They’re clearly an intelligent race, at the very least a sentient race, and they don’t seem to be enslaved by the nihilanth. What about the antlions, which we don’t see in HL1 at all? What about all the plants? Why is the air breathable? How the fuck does gravity work there? How does Xen even exist? How big is it, how much did we not get to see?Īnd what about the alien grunts? I feel like that’s something that doesn’t get talked about enough. From what I understand, it’s a border world where different dimensions/worlds are kind of stretched together, right? Meaning that all the different flora and fauna had to come from some other wold originally - it wouldn’t make sense for them to have just evolved there, would it? The vortigaunts aren’t from there (although I don’t know if that counts, considering they’re enslaved at that point in the series.) I’m inclined to think the headcrabs aren’t from there either - they had to come from a place that had creatures with semi-humanoid heads. I have so so many questions about HL1 Xen.
